The American Institute of Indian Studies (AIIS) is now accepting applications for our 2023-24 summer, semester, and academic year language programs. AIIS offers intensive, immersion-based instruction in over 15 modern and classical South Asian languages at multiple sites in India.

Aaron Shew on Language Learning and Career Opportunities Aaron M. Shew is an Assistant Professor and REL Wilson Endowed Chair of Agricultural Economics at Arkansas State University. In this spotlight, he shares how these language learning experiences helped to shape his scholarship and about the importance of language immersion programs.
From Austin to Lucknow to Washington, D.C.: Reflections on Language Training from AIIS Language Fellow Charlotte Giles Charlotte Giles is a librarian in the Asian Division at the Library of Congress. In this spotlight, she shares her journey from studying Urdu in Lucknow in summer, fall, and academic year AIIS programs to launching her career at the Library of Congress.


Language Program Alumni
AIIS conducted a survey of language program alumni in 2018. We received responses from 174 former language program participants in various stages of their careers. The responses reflect a body of alumni that is highly educated, employable, and actively engaged in international affairs, South Asian Studies, and community service.
