POSITION SUMMARY 

American Councils is currently seeking a qualified consultant to serve as a Hindi-speaking Resident Director to work on a summer Hindi language program approximately eight weeks in length. The program is designed for undergraduate and graduate students and is focused on the acquisition of Hindi language in an immersion setting. Applicants should provide a description of previous experience in India in their cover letter. The program location is subject to change prior to program start. The consultant agreement includes a scaled compensation fee structure in the event of a cancellation six weeks or less before the start of the program. 

The Resident Director represents American Councils on the program overseas. The Resident Director will work with the host institution, manage communications between American Councils, program participants and local staff, arrange logistics for the group, and advise participants as required and resolve medical and other issues as necessary. 

The Resident Director must be available to program participants on a daily basis; observe classes at the host institution; meet regularly with teachers, administrators, and participants; and arrange group travel and cultural programs and other events and activities focused on the immersion experience. The Resident Director must be available to participants during any emergencies that arise and must communicate regularly with American Councils program staff in Washington, DC. The Resident Director is not permitted to leave the program site or group excursions to conduct personal travel. The Resident Director oversees a small program budget and is responsible for proper documentation of program expenditures and timely completion of a budget report at the end of each month and at the end of the program. Other reporting requirements may apply. 

Prior to departure, the Resident Director will be required to complete an orientation program. The Resident Director may be asked to travel to the program site in advance of the students’ arrival. The Resident Director reports to the DC-based Program Manager and staff. Completion of a successful background check may be required. All offers are contingent upon the candidate’s ability to receive and maintain a visa to the host country where applicable. 

ANTICIPATED CONTRACT DATES:  

May – August 2022 (exact dates will vary by program specifics). Resident Director training dates will be announced separately. 

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Being responsible for and available to a group of American college and graduate students 24/7 at all times during the program; 
  • Advising program participants as needed on a variety of language learning, cultural, adjustment and logistical issues, including on issues such as group dynamics and interpersonal relationships; 
  • Reporting on program activities to program staff in Washington, DC or staff in the host country; 
  • Responding to participant emergencies, including assisting participants with securing medical care and navigating local clinics and hospitals; 
  • Supporting students from diverse backgrounds as well as students who have never traveled abroad before; 
  • Liaising with the host institution and local program staff; 
  • Observing the academic program; 
  • Arranging group travel and cultural programs; 
  • Maintaining adherence to program rules and policies among participants, including a language policy; 
  • Managing a small budget of program funds and maintaining detailed financial documentation, including monthly reports;  
  • Collecting and tagging photographs and videos from students and local staff; 
  • Completing a Resident Director pre-departure orientation and training session; 
  • Working with host families, which may include selection and monitoring of host families, conducting site visits, maintaining weekly communication, and assisting with conflict resolution;  
  • Resolving other program-related issues as necessary; and 
  • Performing other program-related tasks as directed.

Qualifications

  • Advanced written and oral language skills (minimum 2/2+ on DLPT scale, Advanced on ACTFL scale) in Hindi; 
  • Study, work, or extensive travel experience in India; 
  • Experience working in a position of authority with undergraduate or graduate students; 
  • Experience overseeing and guiding groups; 
  • Demonstrated skills in academic and personal counseling preferred; and 
  • Demonstrated skills in general financial accountability.

Position contingent upon funding. All candidates offered a position will be required to provide proof of full Covid-19 vaccination status. American Councils and relevant parties will continue to closely review public health and travel conditions to determine whether participants can travel overseas. The Resident Director position is contingent upon the approval of overseas travel for participants. Resident Directors will only travel to countries which are approved for travel by the State Department and American Councils. 2022 Online Hindi & Urdu Teacher Training Institute

This online teacher training summer institute for Hindi and Urdu teachers emphasizes classroom teaching strategies and basic principles that can be applied to a variety of classroom settings.

Participants develop engaging tasks in the three modes of communication in real-life and meaningful contexts with backwards design. They design and demo- or micro-teach lessons with focus on learner proficiency and background, use of the target language and making it comprehensible and inclusive, as well as based on the use of authentic materials.

The Institute runs for 3 weeks for about 10 hours a week with one pre- and one post-program week about 10 hours each. At the end of program, a completion certificate for 50 hours will be awarded to all participants who successfully complete the coursework.

The program is open to teachers from heritage/community schools, K-12, or college. There is no fee for participating in the program. However, in order to ensure effective training, we can only accommodate a limited number of participants, who will be selected based on an application process. 

Deadline: For full consideration, all application materials (application form and questionnaire) must be received no later than Monday April 25th. We may accept additional applications after April 25 on a rolling basis and will continue to do so until all program slots are filled.

The Department of South Asian Languages and Civilizations and the College of the University of Chicago seek an experienced teacher of Urdu language to help grow its existing offerings in South Asian languages. We invite applications for a position as an Instructional Professor (open rank) in Urdu language. The position begins in academic year 2022-23, with a start date of September 1, 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter. The selected candidate will be appointed at the rank of Assistant Instructional Professor, Associate Instructional Professor, or Instructional Professor, depending on qualifications and educational background. The initial appointment will be for a minimum of two years, with longer initial terms possible depending on initial rank, with review and progression schedule determined by a collective bargaining agreement between the University and the Service Employees International Union.

Responsibilities include both teaching and service duties. Teaching normally consists of seven courses across three quarters, at least 6 of which are Urdu language courses, at all levels of the language. One additional course may include non-language offerings in the College Core or in the Department of South Asian Languages and Civilizations, to be determined in consultation with the Department and College. Service duties may include advising undergraduate theses, creating and overseeing Urdu placement exams and graduate language exams, teaching independent studies, and engaging in outreach, or other program-specific duties. Instructional Professors of all ranks are required to engage in regular professional development.

Qualifications

Applicants are required to have at least one year of previous experience teaching Urdu at the college or post-secondary level, preferably at a North American institution. An M.A. degree or equivalent is required. A Ph.D. in a related field is desirable. Applicants must demonstrate sufficient language ability for teaching Urdu in a university context. Candidates with specialized training in second language acquisition, second language pedagogy, and/or assessment are especially encouraged to apply.

Emory Conference on Hindi 2022

It is with distinct pleasure that the Department of Middle Eastern and South Asian Studies at Emory University invites paper submissions for the inaugural Emory Conference on Hindi Language and Culture. We are delighted to announce that the conference is dedicated to late Dr. Vijay Gambhir which is a testament to the dedication of Vijay ji who encouraged and supported teachers and scholars in conducting advanced scholarly inquiry and creative work in language teaching and pedagogy and helped thousands of students in learning Hindi language efficiently.

This conference will adopt a hybrid format—on Zoom and in person on the Emory University campus —and will be held on Saturday and Sunday, April 23–24, 2022. A comprehensive schedule will be provided prior to the conference.

Dr. Surendra Gambhir will be the Keynote Speaker (in-person) for the conference at the Emory campus.

In this inaugural conference on Hindi language, we hope to address the state of the art in Hindi pedagogy at all levels, to develop differentiated instruction materials which can accommodate heritage and non-heritage students in one class, and to address practical, pedagogical, cultural, and political issues that are related to the enterprise of Hindi and Urdu language instruction. This conference aims to provide a platform for academics, researchers, and teachers to share their thoughts, ideas, and research findings, and potentially to work together on joint projects and programs.

The theme of this year’s Emory Conference on Hindi 2022 will be New Directions in Hindi Language Instruction.

Potential topics include, but are not limited, to the following:

2022 SALTA CONFERENCE

Call for Proposals

South Asian Language Teachers Association (SALTA) is pleased to announce a two-day conference to be held online and in-person (hybrid) in partnership with the University of Wisconsin at Madison on June 24-25, Friday-Saturday, 2022.

The theme of this year’s conference is “Integration.” How do we integrate new pedagogic methodologies into our practices? How do South Asian language programs partner with other stakeholders in their respective institutions? How do curricula and materials intersect with one another inter-institutionally? This conference aims to bring together teachers of South Asian languages of all experience levels and all backgrounds to share and discuss these and similar questions to expand the horizon of South Asian language teaching.

We solicit proposals for panels on relevant topics as suggested by the themes mentioned above. Individual and workshop presentations will also be considered. Each panel will be 90 minutes long with 3-4 panelists/presenters; and individual presentations will be 20 minutes long. A proposal should include name(s) of presenters/panelists and a short description (250-500 words) of your proposed panel/presentation. Proposals and presentations should be in English. Please send your proposals to conference@mysalta.org by Friday, May 6, 2022. Selected panels and presentations will be announced by May 14.

The South Asian Studies Council at the Whitney and Betty MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies at Yale University invites applications for a Lector in Hindi beginning July 1, 2022 for a three- year term, renewable, with rank dependent on qualifications/experience. Full-time Lectors at Yale teach six courses or the equivalent per academic year, which is often realized as five term courses with a sixth course equivalent of advising and/or other administrative service.

Primary duties each academic year will include teaching elementary courses (2) and intermediate courses (2) in Hindi in four learning-skill areas: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. The fifth course will focus on literary, social, political, cultural and/or sociolinguistics topics related to Hindi (as determined on the basis of the appointee’s qualifications and expertise). For the sixth course equivalent, the Lector will advise students and participate in program building of South Asian Studies at Yale, specifically, in developing overseas language and other study opportunities. They will also engage in developing the broad curriculum and the pedagogic materials for Hindi.

We are especially interested in candidates whose language and content expertise will complement existing cross-disciplinary scholarship in the Council. The individual will also teach through Yale’s shared course initiative, in which students from partner institutions participate online in beginning and advanced language courses.

Lectors in the South Asian Studies Council are encouraged to participate in the wide range of professional development opportunities offered through the MacMillan Center, the Center for Language Study, the Poorvu Center for Teaching and Learning, and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences Dean’s Office. Full-time lectors are eligible for Yale’s generous package of benefits, including health coverage. Salary is commensurate with experience and background.

Qualifications

All applicants should have: 1) native or near-native fluency in Hindi; 2) strong English communication skills; 3) experience in teaching Hindi as a second language in a college or university environment; 4) an M.A. or other advanced degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. South Asian languages, literatures, linguistics); 5) demonstrated ability and enthusiasm for in-class teaching/acquisition, familiarity with language training program in South Asia, experience with technologically-aided language learning methods and their development, interest in the broader field of South Asian Studies and/or other relevant disciplines.
